Those who were in the boat worshipped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” (Matthew 14:33).
The disciples had seen Jesus do many miracles and preach with powerful authority. Jesus sent them out and they also did many miracles healing the sick and driving out demons. They even watched Jesus raise the dead back to life. Although Jesus claimed to be the Son of Man, or the Messiah, the disciples could not comprehend who Jesus really was. To my knowledge, the gospels do not record the disciples ever worshipping Jesus until they saw Him walk on water. They had been fighting for their lives in their boat against a storm that was causing waves to crash into their boat. The disciples were frightened for their lives because they were far away from the shore, about three miles out. But when they spotted a man walking out on the water, among the waves, the disciples cried out in terror, thinking it was a ghost. We all know the story of how Jesus assured them that it was He and how Peter said, “Lord, if it is you tell me to come to you on the water.” Peter stepped out with Jesus and walked on the water with him for a short while. As soon as they stepped back into the boat, the wind and the waves immediately died down and the boat was instantly teleported to the shore where they were heading. Then the disciples worshipped Jesus saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” The fear of drowning and the terror of seeing what they thought was a ghost combined with the back-to-back miracles of Jesus and Peter walking on water, the immediate abatement of the storm and the boat teleportation made a staggering impact on their faith, shattering any disbelief and prompted spontaneous worship of Jesus as the Christ.
We too need such walk on water moments where we are instantly changed and we see Jesus for Who He really is. He is the Great I Am. There is none who can compare with Him. He is the powerful, creative Word of God made flesh, Who suffered and died for our sakes, but was raised to back to life and glory. He is the Alpha and the Omega, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty! His face shines like the sun and His voice sounds like the sound of rushing waters. He is the First and the Last, the Living One. He was dead, but He is alive for ever and ever.
Lord, please open my eyes to see You for who You really are. You are God! You are so much greater than my imaginations of who You are. You are much greater than I can comprehend. But please show Your favor and bring me more revelation of Your divine holiness that I may spontaneously burst forth with worship. You created us to worship You. Shine down Your light on us that we may open like flowers before You. Almighty Father, I long to dwell in Your courts forever worshipping You throughout eternity.
